Davidson Avenges '08 Loss With Win Over Kansas
“The ‘Cats only trailed for a total of 14 seconds in the contest…” Davidson defeats #12 KU in Kansas City and provides salve for ‘08 heartbreaker in Detroit. Much more to come. Lefty’s is revived. http://www.davidsonwildcats.com/mobile/index.aspx?story=4134 4th Watts

Vandy, Take 2
With cautious optimism we have watched as our Cats have shot out to a 6-1 start. Davidson’s renaissance, of sorts, will be tested tonight when Vanderbilt comes to Belk, shockingly, for a rematch of last year’s music city massacre. Base Rich and I were on hand for that embarrassing loss in Nashville, and our hopeful expectations for this team took a humble blow afterwards. We...

Pivot
I think the loss hurts more when you know exactly where you lost the reins.  JP sums up the turning point in last night’s loss to Duke: “Really, our offense led to bad defense,” Kuhlman said. “We took some bad shots, and they got a couple blocked shots and that led to some easy baskets, and that really got them going.” From Washington Post.

We enjoyed this pre-game report by the “Duke Basketball Report.”  Let’s keep expectations in check, but for various reasons, Davidson has a shot in this one. 4th Watts

2011-12 Opener Tonight
Here we are on the eve of another Davidson basketball season, and with the new season comes another iteration of Lefty’s Legacy.  Since this blog’s inception in 2007, we’ve moved from Tumblr to Wordpress, back to Tumblr again, and cycled through several designs.  With much of our time these days dedicated to the billable hour, we return this season to a simpler format, where we...

The voice of the Davidson Wildcats gives his take on the season ahead (click above).  Quoth Killer: The Wildcats – the coaches and players – are not happy with their record from the last two seasons. While many schools would love to swap places with Davidson, McKillop and his men are used to more – and expect more.  That’s the mindset they take into the 2011-12 season. They’re not expecting...

Dusting Off the Cobwebs
As the leaves fall, hopes rise.  No extended reflection this time.  Lots of potential, a taste for victory, and an understanding of disappointment.  Let’s see what these ‘Cats can do.  I’m optimistic.     Base Rich

Early Exit
In spite of our absence on this tlog during February, we were excited to see the team’s rejuvenation and subsequent 9 wins in the final 10 games of the regular season.  Unfortunately, the shocking loss to UNCG in the first round of the Socon Tournament gives us a sickening feeling akin to that experienced after the first loss to Penn, way back in November.  We’re not sure what to...

Mid-season Malaise
We had hoped that the opening loss to Penn would mark the lowest point in this season for Davidson’s basketball team.  Unfortunately, a horrid music city massacre at Vanderbilt followed by a listless home defeat at the hands of Appalachian State have us mired in the winter blues.  Despite the recent downturn, a few developments continue to give us hope.  The breakout performances of Chris...

Nashville New Year
I cut my holiday vacation in Houston short and traveled to Nashville on Friday to celebrate New Year’s Eve with Base Rich and, of course, to attend Davidson’s game at Vanderbilt this afternoon at 4:00pm CST.  We’ve been anticipating this one for awhile. To get ourselves into the right state of mind, we again watched the DVDs of Davidson’s wins over Gonzaga and...

Another night in MSG
For the third straight season, Davidson will make its way to New York tonight to play an early-winter game at Madison Square Garden.  Two years ago, Base Rich and I watched Stephen Curry bury West Virginia with a barrage of much-needed three pointers in the final minutes.  Last season, Davidson lost a heart-breaker to Cornell in overtime.  Tonight, St. John’s is the opponent — another...

Thoughts re CoC
Base Rich and I have been working hard today so as to be able to watch tonight’s very important early-season game against College of Charleston (CoC).  Some quick thoughts to ponder as tip-off approaches: Davidson has lost three of its last four games to CoC, a couple of which were real soul-crushers (home game called by Dick Vitale in 2009; Socon Tournament loss in 2009).  Davidson did,...

Five Deep
While I hesitate to make season-long inferences on the basis of single games, it doesn’t take long for me to feel comfortable making wild generalizations.  After five tough road games, the Wildcats have revealed themselves to be strong competitors with a very high collective upside.  Five bits for thought (likely so obvious that they should be characterized as leftovers at this point):      ...

Kool-Aid
In spite of the fact that I constantly berate my again invisible friend Base Rich, he seems to have fallen into a desperate state of writer’s block, I guess.  But regardless of his public disappearing act, make no mistake that we’ve been blowing up each other’s inboxes and voicemails daily with excited commentary on last weekend’s wins over Nebraska and Western Kentucky.  ...

Last Saturday, while reveling in my return to Davidson for reunion weekend, I sent Base Rich the following (original spelling maintained): Nice post.  And yes I stared to lose it at the end of my post.  But I think that’s OK.  Currently at brickhiuse. Trashed. I surely did lose it, and continued to remain lost (in a good way) throughout my weekend at Davidson. But then 7:00 p.m. on...

Great Expectations
And so it begins. With tonight’s tip against Penn in the Cathedral of College Basketball, Davidson enters its 103rd season of intercollegiate play.    I think it’s at least arguable that the durability of the human spirit derives from an incessant belief in the promise of that which has yet to be done—a sort of native optimism.  We like the beginning because we can imagine the...

Five Years' Time
404 miles.  That’s how far I’ll be driving today from Washington, DC to Davidson to attend my 5th year reunion weekend, the traditional first official moment of looking back in a young alumnus’s life.  Sure, I’m excited to return to campus and relive the nostalgia of those four years that have now already been eclipsed by the more than five years since graduation.  But I...

Dear readers: Lefty’s Legacy will be back in full-time Davidson Basketball coverage mode starting November 3.  This is the date that we expect the official preseason rankings to be released — and seems as good a day as any to revive our Davidson Basketball obsession.  Davidson finished #9 in last season’s final ESPN/USA Today poll, and most college basketball writers (including...

Yesterday, it was officially announced that Davidson will face West Virginia in the annual Jimmy V Classic on December 9th at Madison Square Garden. While there is no bigger stage in college basketball than the NCAA Tournament, a prime-time game at Madison Square Garden comes pretty darn close.  Davidson will once again have an opportunity to put the college basketball world on notice, and do so...

Jason Richards' NBA Debut
Last week, Jason Richards was picked up by the Miami Heat and placed on the team’s summer league roster.  Stephen Curry’s future NBA potential is obvious, but Davidson Basketball followers know that Jason Richards’ NCAA point-guard prowess could also translate well in the NBA, a league that has suddenly become fond of point-guards. Last night, the Heat played its first summer...
